Thanksgiving With Pocket Pets

Turkey Day is right around the corner! You may see quite a few articles about Thanksgiving do’s and don’ts for dogs and cats, but what about smaller animals? Hamsters, gerbils, Guinea pigs, and other small pets are also part of the family! Read on as a local Omaha, NE vet discusses celebrating Thanksgiving with pocket pets.

Cage

Make sure to give your tiny pal’s cage a good cleaning before the big day. If your furry buddy’s home is in a family room or living room, you may want to move it to a back bedroom before your guests arrive. Too much commotion could scare the little one! You can also add some safe, suitable props to your pint-sized pet’s cage. If you have children, they may really enjoy making construction-paper turkeys. Just be sure to only hang decorations on the outside of the cage.

Photos

Pocket pets can take some super cute pictures! For an adorable shot, pick up a tiny pilgrim hat for your pet, or stage a miniature dining room table. Just don’t leave your furry friend unattended on the set: your little furball may try to eat his props!

Food

Small animals love food just as much as Fido and Fluffy do! Feel free to give your tiny buddy a special treat. Just be sure to only offer things that are safe for your four-legged pal. Different animals all have their own nutritional requirements, so you’ll want to do some research. For instance, a hamster can enjoy a little plain, cooked turkey meat, but you definitely don’t want to offer any of your main course to a bunny. Ask your vet for specific advice, including portion sizes, healthy snacks, and suitable treats.

Toys

Small animals need plenty of chewable toys to nibble on. For a super cute seasonal plaything, make your tiny pal a toy turkey out of cardboard or plain paper. Just be sure not to give your furry friend anything with sharp edges, dangling threads, or small parts, as these things can all cause injuries. You’ll also want to avoid giving your pet anything coated in paint, stain, varnish, glitter, or dye. Ask your vet for more information.
