Signs of Stress in Cats

Did you know that, just like people, cats can suffer from stress and anxiety? As it turns out, Fluffy’s reputation for being cold, aloof, and calculating isn’t really accurate. Kitties are very emotional little furballs, and can feel anxious, lonely, nervous, scared, or depressed. Your pet can’t really tell you how she’s feeling, thought, so it’s important for you to be able to tell if something is wrong. Here, a Bennington, NE vet lists some signs of stress in kitties.

Litterbox Issues

Cats sometimes stop using their litterboxes when they feel anxious or stressed. Fluffy could also have tummy trouble, which can cause her to vomit or have diarrhea.

Excessive Grooming

If Fluffy is feeling unsettled or upset, she may start grooming herself excessively. This can eventually lead to bald spots and, of course, hairballs.

Reduced Appetite

Cats can be finicky, so it’s not that unusual for Fluffy to turn her nose up at her dinner. However, if she just doesn’t like what’s on the menu, she should meow for something different. If your furball isn’t interested in food at all, she may be sick or anxious.

Hiding

As we all know, cats love seeking out warm, comfy spots for naps. If Fluffy’s favorite spot is inside the linen closet, you probably don’t need to worry if you find her curled up there. However, if your kitty doesn’t want to leave her hiding place, it may be a sign that something isn’t right. Cats often isolate themselves when they feel sick or scared, or if something in their environment is making them uneasy.

Aggression

Your feline pal may have a larger-than-life purrsonality, but at the end of the day, she is very small, and can easily feel threatened. Your kitty may react to stress or fear by lashing out and acting aggressive. Of course, given that cats also sometimes bite or scratch playfully, it can be hard to tell if Fluffy is angry, or just feeling frisky. If your furball has her ears back, and is hissing, growling, or lashing her tail, she’s probably not feeling playful.
