Cats are known for being extremely clean pets. Although Fluffy may sometimes knock your glass over or leave fur on your things, in general she is quite neat and easy to care for. The fact that she will use a litterbox to discretely do her business is also a bonus. However, when it comes to setting up your feline pal’s purrsonal powder room, there are some things to keep in mind. Read on as a West Omaha, NE vet offers tips on setting up Fluffy’s litterbox.
There are plenty of litter brands to choose from. Feel free to experiment, and see what you and your furry pal like best. Keep in mind that some cats do have specific preferences for litter. If you change brands, and your cat stops using the litterbox, go back to your old kind. Also, if you have a kitten, you’ll need to avoid clay and clumping litters. Baby cats can sometimes accidentally ingest litter, which can cause dangerous intestinal blockages.
If you have more than one cat, you’ll need more than one litterbox. Generally, we recommend one box per furball, plus at least one extra. If your feline friend is in her golden years, set out some extra boxes for her. If you have more than one floor, keep a litterbox on each level, so Fluffy doesn’t have to use the stairs as much. Senior cats also sometimes have trouble getting in and out of litterboxes with high sides, so get your kitty one with low walls.
Choosing the right spot is also very important. Most of our feline buddies like a bit of privacy when they’re doing their business. If possible, put the litterbox in a quiet place that is easy for her to reach. Avoid putting the box in drafty areas or direct sunlight.
Litterboxes are definitely convenient, but they don’t exactly make good décor pieces. Buy or make a custom piece of furniture that will conceal Fluffy’s powder room. Enclosed end tables are great for this! Look online for great options, ideas, and instructions. You can also conceal the litterbox behind a folding screen. Or, put it under an end table and drape pretty fabric over it.
