Hug your Hound Day is coming up on September 14th. This one holiday we are delighted to celebrate! Our canine pals are much more than furry little roommates. They are our friends and companions, and they can form some very strong bonds with their human buddies. Read on as an Omaha, NE vet lists some reasons to hug your hound!
Man’s Best Friend is very faithful, loving, and loyal, and will stand by you no matter what happens. However, that friendship—like any other—needs to be nurtured to bloom. Hugging and cuddling your furry best friend can help him feel loved, which will go a long way towards cementing that special bond.
Hugs have a remarkable effect on us mentally and emotionally. In fact, hugging someone for just 20 seconds helps people feel calmer and happier. Dogs often have a way of sensing when their humans are down. Fido may stick extra close when you are sad or sick.
If your canine buddy is still a puppy, hugging can also help with socialization. You want little Fido to get used to being handled and petted.
Hugs benefit pets just as much as they do us. If Fido is frightened, perhaps due to loud noises, such as a thunderstorm, hugging him may help calm him. Plus, many of our four legged friends are very cuddly by nature, and really crave love and attention.
It can be hard to resist that adorable furry face and wagging tail. Another reason to hug your pooch? He’s adorable!
Many of our canine friends are actually very affectionate, and really enjoy cuddling with their humans. However, you really should never hug a strange dog. Hugs just don’t translate well into doggy language. In fact, they are often considered a sign of dominance. Let a new pup get to know you first. It’s also important to let Fido have his say. Not all dogs enjoy being hugged!
If your pooch seems super anxious about hugs, don’t force him. There are other things you can do to get that tail going. Toys and treats always go over well with our canine companions. Fido may also enjoy a fun session of Fetch.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if ever we can be of assistance. As your Omaha, NE animal clinic, we’re here to help!
