Purrfect Resolutions For People With Kittens

Happy New Year! Have you recently adopted a kitten? Congratulations! Baby cats are super cute. They’re also super mischievous, super frisky, super curious, and super fragile. You’ve definitely got some pet parenting to do in 2023. An Omaha, NE vet lists some ‘purrfect’ resolutions for kitten owners below.

Keep Up Veterinary Care

Your tiny furball will need to come in a few times this year, for exams, microchipping, vaccines parasite control, and spay/neuter surgery. Most kittens get adopted when they’re between 2-3 months old. Little Fluffy is still very small and fragile. Watch for signs of sickness, such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory issues, and/or lethargy. Call us ASAP if you notice anything unusual.

Set Ground Rules

You’ll need to teach your feline friend proper petiquette. If your pint-sized pet does something she shouldn’t, whether it’s biting, scratching, or jumping on a counter, correct her gently but firmly. You want to annoy little Fluffy without hurting her. Clap your hands, squirt her with water, or bang two pots together. That way, she’ll form a bad association with the undesired behavior, rather than with you.

Offer Great Nutrition

Cats grow very, very quickly. That growth spurt will put a lot of strain on little Fluffy’s body, so it’s important to make sure she’s properly fueled up. Proper nutrition is crucial here! Offer her a high-quality, kitten food.

Socialize

Socialization is very important to little Fluffy’s mental and emotional development. Have people stop over to pet and play with your fuzzy little friend. You want her to get used to being held and handled young, so she grows into a friendly, sociable adult.

Take All The Pictures

This special and adorable time in your feline pal’s life will be over before you know it. Capture those charming moments!

Rest Time

All cats are tired, but kittens are extremely sleepy. Feline growth hormones are released during sleep patterns. Make sure that little Fluffy has plenty of napping spots to choose from. (That means offering lap space, too.)

Activate The Purr

Kitties think of their humans as second parents, but that relationship has to be nurtured. There really is something special about raising your furry friend yourself. Spend lots of time with little Fluffy!
