Make A Dog’s Day: Toys

October 22nd is Make A Dog’s Day! We’re more than happy to celebrate this one. Of course, one of the best ways to make Fido’s day is to get him a new toy. There are a few things to think of when you go shopping for your canine companion. An Bennington, NE vet lists some of them in this article.

Size

One of the first things you’d want to look at is size. Fido could choke himself on something made for a smaller pooch, and he could hurt his teeth or mouth on something made for a bigger dog.

Material

Before picking up a new toy, check the label. Ideally, you’ll want to stick with things that were made here in North America. Pet products from overseas aren’t necessarily subjected to as many quality standards as those from here are, and may contain chemicals or materials that aren’t safe for Fido.

Purpose

Dog toys are not one-size-fits-all. Some, like tennis balls, are really just best for amusing pups and getting them moving. Others, such as puzzle toys, provide more mental stimulation. Offer Fido a variety of playthings.

Aggression

Not every type of toy is right for all dogs. Some playthings can trigger aggressive tendencies. If Fido is really feisty, games like Tug O War may bring that out in him. If you think this may be an issue with your pooch, consult your vet.

Stuffed Animals

Many dogs love plushie toys. Some pooches use them for comfort toys, and snuggle up with them. Others just like to,well, destroy them. These toys often remind Fido of the small critters that wild dogs hunt. However, the squeakers and stuffing can be choking hazards. Supervise your furry pal closely when he’s using these toys.

Toy Care

Our canine friends play with their mouths, so it may not take long for Fido’s toys to get crusty and gross. Your pup’s playthings will need some care. However, before you try to clean anything, take time to see if it’s even going to be worth it. If it’s still in good shape, you should be able to wash rubber and plastic toys in the dishwasher. You won’t need soap: steam and hot water will do the job. Stuffed animals can go into the washer.
