Foods You Should Never Give Your Dog

March 1, 2016

If there’s one thing we know about Man’s Best Friend, it’s that he has a very healthy appetite. In fact, our canine buddies will eat pretty much anything. Fido’s undiscriminating palate can sometimes work against him, however. Your beloved dog could get very sick if he eats something that isn’t good for him! As a responsible pet owner, you’ll need to be very careful with what you feed your furry friend. Below, an Omaha, NE vet lists some foods you should never give dogs.

Grapes, Currants, and Raisins

Grapes, currants, and raisins can be extremely toxic to dogs. Even eating a single grape can make your adorable pet very sick! These small fruits are particular concerning because it’s so easy to drop one and have your canine buddy snap it up before you can stop him.

Chocolate

While chocolate bars may be little bits of bliss for us, for Fido, they can be very dangerous to Fido. Never give your dog chocolate.

Nuts

Many types of nuts are dangerous to our canine friends. There is an exception here: peanut butter is safe for pets.

Garlic, Onions, and Scallions

These popular foods are often used as flavoring for many different dishes, so it can be easy to overlook them when giving your canine buddy treats, such as leftover meat.

Avocados

Avocados are also on the no-no list for Man’s Best Friend. Don’t give Fido any of that yummy guacamole dip!

Pitted Fruits

While the flesh of certain fruits, such as apples, may be safe, seeds, pits, and pips can choke your canine pal or cause dangerous intestinal blockages.

Xylitol

Xylitol is often found in processed foods, such as baked goods and gum. It is extremely toxic to dogs, and can make your beloved pet very sick. Never give Fido anything without checking the ingredient labels first.

Caffeine

We know, caffeine is basically a morning necessity for many people. For Fido, however, it can cause heart palpitations and other dangerous medical problems. Keep that coffee all to yourself!

Alcohol

Alcohol can be very dangerous for Man’s Best Friend! Don’t let Fido have anything that contains alcohol. Your furry pal could get very sick if he imbibes!
