Dwarf Hamsters

Do you think small animals are cute? One of our tiniest animal companions is also one of the most adorable! Even full-sized hamsters are quite small, so as one can imagine, the dwarf hamsters are really little. An Omaha, NE vet offers some care tips below. 

Basics

These little guys tend to be quite lively. They usually play at night and sleep during the day, but they will adjust their schedules to match their humans’. They live about 2 to 3 years, so they don’t really require a very long term commitment. This is one reason that hamsters are such popular kids’ pets.

Temperament

Hamsters are usually gentle, though they may bite if startled. Always be very gentle when handling your tiny pal. Never swoop Hammie up from behind or when he’s sleeping. Getting picked up unexpectedly can be quite scary!

Grooming

Hammie is naturally clean. He won’t require regular baths, though he will enjoy weekly dust baths. You can also wipe his fur down with a damp cloth if he gets dirty.

Roommates 

Although most hamsters should live alone, dwarf hamsters can live together. There are a few caveats, however. You should only keep same sex pairs together. It’s also best if they’ve grown up together. Keep an eye on your miniature furballs, and be prepared to separate them if they fight.

Dental Care

Hamsters have open-rooted teeth, so you’ll need to provide lots of safe, suitable chew toys. These can be wood, wicker, cardboard, or even paper items.  Ask your vet for specific advice on this.

Health

Smaller animals are  just as susceptible to illness and injury as other ones. Keep an eye out for warning signs. These include skin trouble, fur loss, lethargy, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, reduced appetite, weight loss, runny nose, and cheek pouch swelling. Contact your vet if you notice anything off. 

Food

Your adorable furball can have blocks or pellets for their main meals, supplemented with small bits of fresh produce, grains, and grass hay. Make sure you are only offering safe foods. Avoid giving your furry little friend fruit seeds; rhubarb; citrus fruits; caffeine; alcohol; garlic; onion; and/or raw tomatoes, beans, or potatoes. Fresh water is also a must. Use a water bottle or a shallow bowl. Ask your vet for more information.
