October is officially Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! Are you considering getting a new pup? If so, please think about getting Fido from a shelter. An Omaha, NE vet discusses adopting shelter dogs below.
Shelters are overflowing with sweet, lovable pups that need good homes. It can be a bit daunting to try and pick just one pooch out of a row of adorable furry faces! Spend some time with your new canine friend before deciding, and see what you can find out about Fido’s history. Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment, so it’s important to be sure you’ve made the right choice.
Before bringing Fido home, make sure you have everything he needs. Your shopping list should include food, toys, treats, bedding, dishes, waste baggies, grooming supplies, a pet first-aid kit, a crate, a leash, and a harness or collar.
Some of our canine pals have a knack of chewing on, well, pretty much anything. Make sure your home is safe for your new pet by removing or securing anything that could be dangerous. Some things you’ll want to address include toxic plants; wires and cords; plastic bags or ties; small objects; clothing pieces; such as socks; chemicals; medication; and small or sharp items. If you have a yard, make sure that your fencing is secure. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate.
Going to a new home is a huge change for a dog, and can be pretty overwhelming. Fido may have quirks you aren’t aware of yet. For instance, he may be frightened of loud noises. Use a sturdy leash when walking him. If he isn’t fully trained, start ‘school’ right away.
It will take time for you and Fido to get to know each other. Give your canine pal lots of time to settle in. If you have other pets, ask your vet for tips on making introductions. With love, patience, and great TLC, Fido will soon be overflowing with tail wags and happy dances!
Adopting from a shelter is truly something to feel great about. It’s a wonderful thing to give an animal in need a second chance at happiness!
