Did you know that November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month? Older cats are just as cute and lovable as kittens, but they often have a very hard time getting adopted. Read on as an Omaha, NE vet offers some tips on adopting a senior cat.
Senior cats make great pets! Fluffy will be much calmer than a kitten, and won’t be quite as likely to get into mischief. Older pets are also often super-affectionate. Many of them just want a warm lap to curl up on! You may find that your new feline buddy is absolutely adorable, and very sweet and loving.
When you go to pick up supplies for your kitty, keep Fluffy’s age in mind. Older cats often have a hard time getting in and out of litterboxes with high walls, so choose one with lower sides. If you get your kitty some pet furniture, pick something that will be easy for her to climb. Beds are also important. While all cats tend to be rather drowsy, senior kitties sleep even more than other felines. Offer your drowsy furball plenty of comfy beds. You may also want to get pet ramps or stairs to help your furry pal reach her favorite napping spots.
Schedule a veterinary appointment for your feline friend. It’s very important for Fluffy to get a thorough exam right away, so that any health issues can be diagnosed and treated quickly. You’ll also want to make sure your cat is fixed, microchipped, and current on her vaccines and parasite control. During your appointment, ask for professional recommendations on your kitty’s care, diet, and activity needs.
Put all of Fluffy’s things in a quiet back room, such as a spare bedroom, at first. This will give your kitty a quiet, cozy place to settle in and get used to her new home. Spend lots of time with your furry buddy, but don’t force attention on her. Just offer your furball lots of TLC. If you talk to her, play with her, and offer her toys and treats, you’ll have that little motor going in no time!
