7 Things to Consider Before Adopting an Exotic Cat

February 15, 2021

Have you always wondered what it would be like to own an exotic cat, like a lion or tiger? This sounds great in theory, but in practice, it can be very different. While you can find exotic cats for sale, you should definitely think twice before buying one. Below, your local Omaha, NE vet lists some things to think about.

Price

Exotic cats are expensive, to the tune of thousands of dollars. The exact price will vary on the type of feline you are getting. Mid-sized kitties, like Servals, could cost between $1700 and $3000. Ocelots can go for as much as $15,000, while tiger cubs (illegal in many places) can cost $7500 or more.

Laws

Laws on owning exotic pets differ greatly depending on where you are located. For example, Savannah cats are illegal in many states, but not in others. If you have an HOA, you may also need to consider their regulations. It’s also something to think about if you think you’ll eventually move to another area.

Space

Your standard housecat will get along just fine in a smaller home or an apartment. Exotic cats, however, are bigger and more energetic, and therefore require a lot of room. You might need to build a large enclosure for your pet. Keep in mind that an exotic cat won’t be happy in an empty pen or cage. You’ll need to have plenty of furniture and toys for your new pet, too.

Veterinary Care

You’ll also need to find a quality veterinarian that is experienced with exotic cats. Most—if not all—veterinarians are well-trained when it comes to providing care for domestic cats. Exotic cats, on the other hand, have different needs.

Behavior

Think an exotic cat will act like a giant housecat? Think again. Some don’t take to litter boxes, while others won’t take kindly to being handled. Ocelots, for example, really don’t enjoy domestication and often ignore commands (even more than your average housecat!).

Ethics

We understand the appeal for exotic pets: they’re unique, fascinating, and downright beautiful. But the fact is that many of them just aren’t well-suited to being pets. This goes for kitties, too. You might be better served donating to a reputable rescue instead!

Compromise

Have you ever considered a Bengal? These adorable, charismatic kitties are considered exotic but they’re no bigger than the average housecat. Plus, they have a lot of charisma!
